If the Teacher Center is Free, Why is there a Fee for My Workshop?
When teachers call to enroll for workshops, we are often asked why certain workshops have fees associated with them. Many of the workshops listed in our brochure are not DTC workshops, but workshops offered by other State agencies, parks or museums; the workshops offered by these groups often include make-and- take items or sample lesson plans for each teacher to take with them. As we all know too well, most educational programs continue to have budget shortfalls and this fee is one way for the agencies to offset the cost of their workshops.
Trips and guest speakers sponsored by the DTC require a $40 check to hold your place at the event. These checks are held and returned to all teachers who participate in the event as scheduled, but if a registrant does not attend, and did not cancel in a timely manner prior to the event, the money will be deposited into a DTC account. The DTC Policy Board elected to implement this policy due to the increasing number of no-shows at our large events. These events have a per person cost and we must use our registration ros-ter to calculate this cost; when teachers do not come to these events as scheduled, it costs the DTC money and reduces our ability to offer additional workshops in the future. The Policy Board’s goal with this policy is two-fold: 1.) we hope to reduce the number of no-shows to the events and 2.) we want to recoup some of the funds lost due to the no-shows. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.
